The Basements Data Dashboard is a free resource built by Pratt Center to help New York City Council members and advocates understand the potential opportunity for new basement and cellar apartments in neighborhoods across New York City.

Please Note: This tool identifies homes with basements or cellars that—if the City created a pathway to legalization—could potentially be converted into safe, affordable apartment units. These estimates are based on building and zoning code considerations used in the East New York Basement Apartment Conversion Pilot (undertaken in Brooklyn’s Community District 5). Though not all of these units would ultimately be eligible for such a program, converting just a fraction of these spaces into apartments could add tens of thousands of housing units to New York City.
