Director's Update (February 2025)

A note from Alexa Kasdan

It’s no question that 2025 will be a year of uncertainty and struggle. We are already feeling the impact of federal actions that threaten our long-term community partners and target the core issues and values that ground our work: climate, racial and economic justice. At the same time, in NYS, our governor is failing to meet the urgent need for action on clean energy. And in NYC, we continue to reel from political scandals as we prepare for a mayoral election. This is a lot to face. But in times like these, we don’t back down–we move forward, with focus and a renewed sense of purpose.

That’s what we’re doing at Pratt Center. We’re rolling up our sleeves and doubling down to support critical work at the local level. We’re retrofitting small homes in Brooklyn to ensure they are energy-efficient and resilient. We’re advocating for better buses on Flatbush Ave., so transit riders, many of whom are essential workers, get the reliable transportation they deserve. We’re fighting to curb toxic home flipping in rapidly gentrifying neighborhoods, so communities of color can remain rooted in the place they call home. And we’re empowering BIPOC-led businesses to secure the capital they need to thrive. We continue to do this all in deep partnership with community-based organizations on the frontlines.

These aren’t just policy fights—they’re about people. This work has never been more urgent, and I’m grateful to be in it with you all.
