Expanding the Coney Island People’s Planning Initiative

This project is designed with the goal of supporting the Brooklyn-based community nonprofit Coney Island Neighborhood Revitalization Corporation (CINRC) with their ongoing efforts to develop a community-focused “people’s plan” for the peninsula. The collaboration began in 2024 as an Advanced Sustainable Communities Studio in Pratt Institute’s Graduate Center for Planning and the Environment (GCPE). The Taconic grant will support efforts to expand community outreach, engagement, and input into the people’s planning process. CINRC seeks a more representative and complete survey sample to form the legitimate basis of a neighborhood “people’s plan.” In collaboration with the GCPE advanced studio courses, this process, will seek to identify and articulate a cohesive community vision and action plan to guide what is traditionally ad hoc planning and development on Coney Island. The work will complement the Fall 2024 and 2025 GCPE advanced studios and will culminate in a robust survey outreach program, several community workshops, an interactive website, and an updated “people’s plan” report.
