Managing Lean and Green Workshop - How Efficient is Your Building?

Event on December 1, 2010

Calculate and keep track of your building’s energy use. Learn how to choose and evaluate energy efficient improvements in your building.  Most buildings know their energy and water usage as one number: dollars, and expect it to go up every year.  Savvy building owners block out their usage and costs per square foot, and even can separate how much energy they use for heat vs. hot water.  All of this is 4th grade arithmetic, and today, we’ll explain it to managers, executive directors, and accountant/bookkeepers, so you can begin to track and grade your buildings’ consumption of water, electricity, gas, and oil. Attendees will get a sample report card e-mailed to them after the session, so they can see how all of their buildings are performing.

Presenter:

F.L. Andrew Padian, Vice President for Energy Initiatives, The Community Preservation Corporation
F.L. Andrew Padian is Vice President for Energy Initiatives for The Community Preservation Corporation (CPC), a not-for-profit affordable housing mortgage lender, where he is working in the implementation of the Green Loan Program, working with CPC staff and building owners across New York State.  He has 30 years of experience in the building science, and has performed detailed energy analysis on hundreds of buildings across the country.  He created the first national model for training and certification of building managers and maintenance staff of multifamily buildings for energy efficiency; over 2000 participants have taken the extensive 1 to 5 day training.

Managing Lean and Green - Engage Tenants and Staff in Greening the Building

Event on January 5, 2011

Maintaining energy efficiencies and sustainable practices in buildings is a multi-tiered effort – a building is only as green as the people who manage and live in it. Tenants and staff are key players in reducing energy use, and building owners and agency management can encourage and impact activities that reduce consumption and waste. Hear from building staff about their on-site sustainable activities, from an environmental psychologist on strategies for long-term effectiveness, and from tenant education experts about effective communication. A panel discussion will focus on how to train and engage tenants and staff to make sustainable choices through understanding and changing their behaviors.

The panel will be moderated by Sally Larsen, Sustainability Outreach Coordinator, the Supportive Housing Network of New York.

Speakers:

  • Cathie Brady, Director of Property Management, Fordham Bedford Housing Corporation
Catherine oversees maintenance and services for over 100 buildings with nearly 3,000 units at FBHC, a not-for-profit housing organization that manages, owns, and develops sound and safe affordable housing.
  • Mirele Goldsmith, Ph.D., Environmental Psychologist, Green Strides Consulting
Mirele is an SSC Certified Green Auditor with a Ph.D. in environmental psychology. She helps organizations move toward sustainability through behavior change.
  • Yianice Hernandez, Senior Program Director, Enterprise Green Communities

  • Mary Tchamkina, Tenant Education Program Coordinator, Solar One
