Queens Resident Receives Free Insulation and Energy-Saving Measures

Retrofit NYC Case Study posted November 15, 2010

Leon, Southeast Queens

2-Family Home

Leon, a Queens homeowner, learned of the EmPower New York program from a flyer included in his Con Edison utility bill. By participating in the program, he received a free evaluation of energy usage, with recommendations that included:
  • covering windows in plastic sheeting
  • adding insulation to floor boards of stairs
  • leading to basement
  • hanging heavy drapes over windows
Leon qualified for EmPower New York as a Con Edison gas customer withhousehold income less than 60 percent of the area median. Leon followed through with all recommendations and received new insulation in the attic from a certified installer. Lighting throughout the apartment was replaced with compact fluorescent bulbs. The insulation work took four hours to complete. EmPower New York provided all these energy-saving measures at no cost. Leon expects to see a reduction of $300 annually in his heating and electricity bills due to improved lighting and reduced heating fuel needs.
