Energy Audit with NYSERDA Participating BPI Contractor
Apex Engineering, P.C.
Located in New York City and services all five boroughs
Mario Viscovich, a professional engineer, runs his own Engineering and Contracting company, Apex Engineering, P.C. Mario partnered with Sustainable South Bronx through the Retrofit NYC Block by Block initiative to help expand his business and work with more homeowners to lower their energy costs. He wanted to learn the best ways for homeowners to save energy and enrolled in a Building Performance Institute (BPI) Building Analyst course. Through the course he expanded his expertise and became a BPI certified contractor. In the building analyst course Mario learned more about performing energy audits for 1-4 family homes, but he did not stop there. By taking further courses, such as the BPI Building Envelope, Heating Specialist, Air Conditioning and Heat Pump Specialist, and Multifamily Building Analyst programs, Mario developed an expertise with heating and cooling systems, air sealing, insulation, and many other energy efficiency related measures and equipment. Through NYSERDA’s program, Mario’s company is also a NYSERDA approved Solar PV installer.
With the technical know-how from his BPI certifications, Mario was able to open new business opportunities for Apex Engineering. As a NYSERDA participating Home Performance Contractor, Apex can service customers through NYSERDA incentive programs and provide free or low-cost energy audits. Apex receives reimbursement from NYSERDA for these energy audits and Mario encourages other contractors to become BPI certified to build their businesses. The certifications opened his business to new business opportunities that increased the bottom line.
Mario’s Apex Engineering has grown since the company became BPI certified and a NYSERDA approved contractor. In addition to increasing profits, the business growth has enabled him to train eight new employees. Five of the eight are now BPI certified and all eight are receiving training and will take further BPI certification courses. Working with Apex has been a great opportunity for his new staff. The eight new employees were all unemployed before working with Apex. They are part of the On-the-Job training program that is partially funded by NYSERDA. In addition to his own workforce, Mario hires local subcontractors for specific projects and helps lower energy costs while growing Apex and other contracting businesses. He says the Green Jobs – Green New York (GJGNY) program is an excellent opportunity for contracting businesses, homeowners, and workers alike.
The homeowner featured in this video is Deputy Bronx Borough President Aurelia Greene.
