Green Job Creation Potential in New York City's Manufacturing Sector

Report  |  January 26, 2012

This report analyzes New York City's manufacturing industry and the growth potential of greening operations. Making processes more eco-friendly has proven to be a successful business strategy for NYC manufacturers. The research presented in this report indicates that firms that have pursued greening have weathered the recession economy better than their sector counterparts. These positive findings have not yet translated to a demand for new employees, but Pratt Center finds that there is a particular opportunity to expand and create jobs in the building products sub-sector, including products that promote energy efficiency. The report concludes with a series of recommendations to develop demand for local green products and labor, build relationships for local sourcing, increase access to small business incentive programs, and coordinate green product development with workforce training resources.
