Green Manufacturing
The New York Industrial Retention Network is committed to green manufacturing: industrial production that minimizes environmental impacts, including greenhouse gas emissions. Urban manufacturing is in itself green becuase it generates goods for local and regional consumption, reducing carbon emissions related to shipping, and is accessible to workers by mass transit, bicycle or foot. Sustainable manufacturing processes also help manufacturers succeed in the urban environment, where they must coexist in close quarters with other businesses and often residential communities.
NYIRN is a leading resource on green manufacturing in New York City. We work directly with companies and in support of policies to promote environmentally responsible business practices in the manufacturing sector. Greener practices include understanding and addressing environmental impacts of a product's production, maximizing energy efficiency in the building and manufacturing processes, and local procurement of goods.
RenewableNY
NYIRN manages the RenewableNY program to assist industrial companies in New York City to implement energy efficiency projects. Note: While all grants are currently allocated, RenewableNY can still provide you with custom referrals to receive an energy audit or estimates for an energy efficiency project.
RenewableNY provides companies with project management assistance to identify opportunities for energy savings, and small grants to implement projects. Promoting energy conservation helps improve a company’s efficiency and competitiveness, thereby helping to save jobs and provide real energy savings in New York City.
To date, 39 companies have received grants that have leveraged over $2 million in private and public investment. Projects include energy efficient lighting, solar energy systems, energy efficiency process equipment, cogeneration units (combined heat and power), and other energy efficient technologies.
RenewableNY plays an important role in reaching out directly to the NYC industrial sector, which is responsible for approximately 8 percent of citywide carbon emissions. The program raises awareness about opportunities for energy efficiency and helps industrial firms meet the City’s goals of reducing carbon emissions. Estimated energy savings through RenewableNY include:
- 324,500 kWh saved through efficiency installations
- 158 kW of solar energy systems installed
- 945 thm of gas avoided
The program was initiated by the New York City Council in 2006 under the “North Brooklyn Energy Grant Program”, and was expanded City-wide by a grant from U.S. Congressman Jerrold Nadler and the U.S. Department of Energy.

Made in NYC
NYIRN promotes the industrial sector and manufacturing businesses through Made in NYC, a searchable directory of hundreds of New York City-based manufacturers. Businesses that produce environmentally sustainable products and/or use green production processes are highlighted with a green apple, and users can search specifically for green products and manufacturers.
