Managing Lean and Green - Implementing Integrated Pest Management in Affordable Housing

What is the safest way to keep vermin out of your building? Can it be done without resorting to harmful chemicals?  This workshop brings together leaders in the design and implementation of integrated pest management (IPM) strategies in affordable housing.   IPM is a series of approaches that manage pest damage on households in an economical way, with the least possible hazard to residents, property, and the environment.  IPM aims to utilize common sense strategy without reliance on harmful chemicals and other potentially unhealthy methods.

Panelists will discuss their amazing projects, their goals and the yield they have harvested in terms of dollars, produce and lessons.  Participants will leave this session with ideas, inspiration and an understanding of how urban farming fits into the state agricultural department’s priorities, programs and funding.

Managing Lean and Green - Mobilize Residents: Get More Green From Your Building

This session builds on last year’s workshop “Engaging Tenants and Staff in Greening your Building”. Affordable housing providers will present four case studies from 2010-2011that highlight different techniques and processes for engaging and educating tenants. Environmental Psychologist, Mirele Goldsmith will present current theory and practices on how to change attitudes and behavior related to environmental activities. Pratt Center's Art, Culture and Sustainability Project

In the spring of 2011, Pratt Center for Community Development launched a two-year program designed to connect the arts and artists with our multi-layered work, helping New York City communities to become more environmentally sustainable. Supported by a grant from the Rockefeller Foundation’s Cultural Innovation Fund, the Center has partnered with academic and community organizations to produce innovative culture, arts, media and organizing strategies that seek to engage neighborhood residents and artists to promote sustainable, environmental action. This project is a part of Pratt Center’s broader goal to develop replicable models that will aid urban communities’ efforts to become environmentally sustainable -- intensive work we are doing in partnership with nine different community organizations in all five boroughs of NYC.
