East Williamsburg Workers

Map last updated October 4, 2010

The Industrial Business Zones (IBZs) in East Williamsburg, Brooklyn, and Maspeth, Queens, reflect a pattern common among areas with high concentrations of manufacturing businesses: workers come from all over the city and region, and a majority - even from nearby neighborhoods - drive to get there. As former industrial areas with better access to transit, such as Chelsea, Long Island City and the Williamsburg waterfront, have been converted to upscale residential and commercial use, manufacturing has become increasingly concentrated in areas far from subway lines.

One sign of unmet demand for improved mass transit in these IBZs: a sizeable share of car-poolers.

A strong walk-to-work presence shows the value to employers and workers of zoning that keeps industry near housing.
