Solar Thermal - How Solar Thermal Works

Solar thermal uses the sun’s energy for hot water, space heating and even in some cases cool air.  Flat panels or tube collectors are typically installed on building roofs to heat fluids.  Most current incentives are given for systems that provide hot water (a typical system can provide 50-80% of residential hot water).

Other uses of solar thermal for which there are also incentives include:

  • Heating water to provide space heating
  • A combo system – heating water to provide both hot water & space heating
  • Heating air for building heating
  • Cooling applications – technology that provides cool air; currently this technology can only be utilized on a commercial scale.

Solar thermal produces a lot of energy for a relatively low cost, and has therefore been used successfully all over the world.  New York State aims to accelerate the adoption of Solar Thermal systems, thus saving New Yorkers millions of dollars and reducing CO2 emissions.
