Contractor Training

The Association for Energy Affordability (AEA) and the Bronx Community College (BCC) Center for Sustainable Energy offer the following classes in New York City for building professionals, contractors and others seeking to learn how to conduct energy assessments in buildings:

  • Building Analyst
  • Multifamily Building Analyst
  • Building Envelope

Building Analyst classes teach contractors and other professionals how to analyze and reduce energy use in one- to four-family homes. The class teaches the basics of building science and the whole-house approach to understanding energy efficiency, and includes four days in the classroom and two days conducting an energy audit in the field. There are no prerequisites. This class prepares participants for the Building Analyst certification by the Building Performance Institute (BPI), a national accreditation organization. The BPI certification is a requirement to participate in NYSERDA programs.

Multifamily Building Analyst classes were developed by AEA with the support of NYSERDA and based upon BPI national standards.  The course prepares experienced energy auditors and building analysts for certification as a Multifamily Building Analyst.

Envelope Heating and Cooling classes prepare for certifications and accreditation by BPI (the BA class and either Envelope or Heating BPI certifications are required for accreditation and acceptance as a partner in NYSERDA programs for one- to four-family homes).

Upcoming BPI Trainings: see training calendars at AEA and CSE

NYSERDA now reimburses 50% of the $1,245 cost for the class as long as the participant attends all six days. An additional 25% will be reimbursed for new certifications for staff of participating HP contractors. The BPI test and certification fees ($550) will also be reimbursed by NYSERDA for contractors that pass the BPI written and field tests and join the program.
